Electronic vehicular traffic control units in the nature of GPS and radio-based and GPS and infra-red based communications systems for remotely controlling traffic signals comprised of vehicle components, namely, vehicle computer units consisting of onboard computers, GPS receivers, FHSS transceivers, application software, and graphical user interface software all which communicate vehicle location and status to a central monitoring unit and simultaneously transmit, via radio signal or infra-red signal, a traffic signal preemption request for emergency vehicle preemption (EVP) applications or a traffic signal priority request for transit signal priority (TSP), light rail transit (LRT) and street car applications to each equipped intersection, comprised of intersection equipment, namely, a priority detector consisting of transceivers and computers, antenna, and graphical user interface software, all which receive and process the signals transmitted by the aforementioned vehicle computer units and convey the request for a change in traffic signal status so that equipped vehicles may move through intersections unimpeded, and comprised of a central monitoring unit, namely, application software, associated user interface software, computer screens and keyboards, all for configuring, provisioning and displaying real-time operational status of the traffic control units, which is triggered by entry of the vehicle into a rectangular virtual zone of a street intersection which can be pre-programmed and custom designed for agencies and modifiable by agencies for any equipped vehicle and any equipped intersection
