Computer programs for use in automated address, barcode, and other symbol capture and or recognition in the field of mailpiece and parcel processing; including providing an open architecture for distributing recognition and processing requests to enrichment devices, which enrichment devices provide capabilities for address and barcode recognition, and potentially other recognition or processing; wherein the computer program(s) provide at least one of the following functions: receive image processing requests from sorting machine controllers, return processing results to sorting machine controllers, send image processing requests to enrichment devices with appropriate capabilities, receive processing results from enrichment devices, aggregate and/or arbitrate between results from enrichment devices, binarize images for enrichment devices that need bi-tonal images
