Educational ,gaming, and object cataloging apparatus. A hand-held electronic device used for educational, game playing and object cataloging purposes. The device is used to detect special labels and associate audio with those labels using the recording and playback capability of the device, the recording and playback being done coincident with label detection. Usage of the apparatus involves reading specialized labels using the label detection capability of the device and prompting the user to record audio for a label, if there is no prior audio associated with that label. If there is audio already associated with that label on the device, then automatic playback of that audio is initiated by the device. The device is intended for multiple uses such as an educational device to aid children in reading books, as a gaming device for children, as a language learning apparatus, and as a general purpose object cataloging apparatus.
