Separation containers being separators for the cleaning and purification of liquids and being used in association with a downspout or conduit for the treatment of rainwater flowing from a metal roof or waste water from a mining operation for the sorption of aqueous phase heavy metal cations therefrom, the separation containers having interior piping and a distribution manifold and containing hardened granular aqueous solution treatment media made from organic material for treating the rainwater or waste waters, and redirecting a downward flow of the rainwater or waste water to an upward fluid flow through the treatment media for producing improved hydraulic characteristics, said treatment media being made from naturally-occurring, carbon-based organic materials that have partially decayed or decomposed over time in the ground, are plant or animal-based products that were subjected to a bacterial or thermal decomposition process to partially decompose the organic materials contained therein, or are fermented products not meant for human consumption, such as hardened granular water treatment media for physical filtration or sorption of aqueous phase heavy metal cations from the rainwater or waste waters, the treatment media being made from peat, composted media, distiller's grains, silage, livestock manure, sewage sludge, lignite coal, charcoal, partially-decomposed wood, torrefied wood chips, biochar, apatite (calcium phosphate), zeolites, and combinations thereof
